Staff Recommendations

Eagle Harbor booksellers are a diverse lot! Check out our current 2017 staff picks and see whose recommendations work for you. You can also click to view prior annual staff picks below!

Alison

Alison has been at Eagle Harbor Books since 2000. She is the head buyer for our Children,Young Adult and Gift sections. In her spare time, Alison likes to read, work on jigsaw puzzles, bake with her daughters - and play in the dirt, sometimes with her grandsons.

Andrew

Andrew's reputation should have preceded him. He enjoys cooking, long walks on the beach, and puppies.

Ann

Ann came to the Island shortly after Cpt. Vancouver made his brief stop at Restoration Point and has lived here off and on ever since. A former member of the Library Cart Precision Formation marching in the Fourth of July parade, she’s also donned skin-colored long underwear and ridden a horse in the Scotch broom parade - as Lady Godiva! Nineteen years ago, she joined the crew at the bookstore and ever since has been shelving books, looking up titles, making up limericks (some of which have been suitable for all ages) and recommending reads. She’s our resident polymath, unless operating something involving electricity when her inner Luddite flares to the surface.

Brendie

After more than a decade as a high school history teacher, Brendie decided to explore the wondrous world of bookselling. Want to know where a certain book is? If she tells you it’s the ninth book from the left-hand side of the fourth shelf of the sixth bookcase in the fiction section, she’s probably right. In addition to reading, her interests include cookies, hanging out with her dog and navigating this weird world of ours.

Caitlin

Recently escaped from Azkaban, this Browncoat enjoys beers, books and bumming through local areas playing at tourist.  Her reading interests are constantly at war, from trenchant historical and science works to the bewitching allure of YA fantasy and science fiction.

Charysse

Charysse is our elusive display fairy. Her interests tend to be fairy/folk tales and memoir - but include hearty doses of feminism, dystopias, social constructs, and neuroscience. So, when not working to keep our space inviting and thought provoking, she will happily steer you to writers who speak to her favorite topics. She also likes lists. A lot. But that’s another topic.

Dave

Dave and his wife Jane own the bookstore. Unlike everyone else there, he knows nothing about the business - but from constantly asking questions, he’s trying to learn. The staff very much hopes he’ll succeed before he starts coming up with ideas he’d like them to implement. A trial lawyer in his prior life and now a part-time human rights lawyer focusing on Africa, he’s looking at the ways in which the bookstore can be a forum for critical issues. Examples include increasing diversity on the island, confronting xenophobia, racism, and considering the distinction between freedom of speech and hate speech.

Emma

Emma was born and raised on the rock. She’s been a stalwart fan of the bookstore since infancy. Her degree in Creative Writing from University of Iowa qualifies her to hold forth ad nauseam on cows, corn, and caucuses (caucii? caucae? cauctopi?). Emma would be delighted to discuss, among other things, conspiracy theories, poetry, cultural and gender studies, science, the classics, mushroom identification, embroidery techniques, beekeeping, feminism, opera, artificial intelligence, and fancy pigeon breeds.
Emma has never met a gift she could not wrap.

Jane

For nearly 10 years before she owned the bookstore with her husband Dave, she’s been a bookseller here. Her previous gigs included serving as the Events Manager, management committee member, and becoming a journeyman book buyer. At least, almost one. She focuses on our body, mind, soul and religions collections. She’s been involved in hosting events, and becoming pals with all of the weird and wonderful people who make this community great. She loves nothing more than to be astonished by the latest brilliant novel. But buyer beware, stop her from telling you a book’s ending that you’re thinking about buying since she has somewhat of a problem controlling her blood/sugar balance when she gets excited about the book in question. That said, it’s nothing compared to her passion for all things relating to baseball.

Jo

Jo came to the bookstore from the theatre, and as such spends more time singing than she intends, while running our receiving operation. She claims that stashing a favorite book into her rabbit warren is a well-deserved perk of that job. Her tastes run to fantasy and science fiction, but a good premise and snappy writing has been known to lure her out of safety and into the dangerous realm of non-fiction.

John

An Island Treasure and award-winning poet, John also runs our Poetry Section. He takes our various staff recommendations and polishes them till they shine. Ever since he was hired in 1991, he’s been championing the works of his favorite poets (Sharon Olds, Wislawa Szymborska, Ted Kooser, Theodore Roethke, Gary Snyder) and assorted authors (Cormac McCarthy, Kate Atkinson, Ian McEwan, Ruth Ozeki, etc.). He also has led a poetry workshop on the island since 1992. Otherwise, he cooks, hikes and makes sure all of us newcomers don’t unduly mess with the bookstore’s storied traditions and its culture.z

Kiyo

That Kiyo was born in Okinawa and raised in New Jersey are not likely the reason he’s a mythology, science fiction, fantasy, classic manga and comics aficionado. Painting, drawing, behavioral economics, gaming, philosophy, pop culture, psychology, science, and technology equally light him up, suggesting he’s either a polymath--or just confused. It may be interesting to know he’s been a graphic designer, PC support manager, software consultant, and software product manager. Yet if you seek to plumb the inner Kiyo, you need to know his two favorite D&D classes are Bards and Monks.

Rodie

Rodie landed on the island long before nearly all of us. She earned her bookseller chops at the wonderful Madison Park Books before she joined us. Our maven of high end literature, she spends an equal amount of time combing the racks for odd titles. You might be wise to resist her efforts to sell you “How to Sit,” but not so wise if you otherwise spurn her recommendations.

Susan

Not every bookstore employs a graduate of the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. Her retired librarian chops, though, may be more what you’re looking for as you seek refuge from Winslow Way. She’s also the pit crew boss of our Mystery Book and Readers’ Circle Book groups, coordinates our consignment program and will send you towards a pulse-pounding thriller if you let her.

Tim

Since he’s our Manager, Tim is fond of trying to herd cats. He denies that’s why he left Omaha, spent years wandering around the west, first studying astrophysics and then more squarely focusing on history, gender theory and writing. He’s been in the book business for years, first at Borders and now at Eagle Harbor Books. Tim is also our head adult book buyer. In his non-existent spare time, he walks the land, cooks, fusses too much with music, and designs new cities. Yes, designs new cities. In addition to history, he focuses on current affairs and politics, although he’s keen to get carried away in discussions about all things science and tech.

Victoria

Her patch of turf at the bookstore is directly off the front desk so Victoria can hover, hover, hover over everything that’s happening; liaising with authors in her capacity as our Events Manager, engaging in every in and off-site store activity, and discharging her informal bookstore hostess duties.   She survived Columbia graduate school and living on the east coast for 30 years nicely, and returned home 8 years ago.  She’s also our e-book and audiobook expert, and is passionate about non-fiction and social justice issues.  Just don’t even try to keep her attention with any of that, however, if she hears anyone in the store mention the word “bird” in a sentence.
