ALASKA-YUKON-PACIFIC EXPOSITION, WASHINGTON’S FIRST WORLD FAIR: A TIMELINE HISTORY (slideshow)

Distinguished staff historians at www.HistoryLink.org, the invaluable online encyclopedia of state and local history in Washington state, Alan J. Stein and Paula Becker present a slideshow on their beautiful book detailing the 1909 fair that brought Seattle and Washington into the national spotlight.

The first world’s fair to make a profit, the exposition set the general plan for the University of Washington campus that exists to this day. Seattle history aficionados are in for an extended treat; thievent dovetails with that of the following week on landscape architect John Charles Olmsted, one of whose projects was this exposition.

GREENSCAPES: OLMSTED’S PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Island author Joan Hockaday
brings her inspiring expertise to a multi-media presentation on the
Northwest projects of landscape architect John Charles Olmsted, the
meticulous, visionary protégé of his famous stepfather, Frederick Law
Olmsted.

Charles employed the Olmsted aesthetic, with its belief that
pastoral spaces are integral to a healthy urban life, in creating works
that include premier park systems throughout the Pacific Northwest, a
multitude of Seattle boulevards, the UW campus, and the
Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.

BEYOND FORGETTING: POETRY & PROSE ABOUT ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Close on the heels of Memory Walks to end Alzheimer’s in Seattle (9/12) and Silverdale (9/19), we proudly host Holly Hughes of Indianola, poet and editor, who heads up a presentation of a moving and beautifully wrought anthology that brings together myriad expressions from all phases of this pervasive and devastating illness. She is joined by poet Tess Gallagher, who contributed a foreword to the collection, and local contributors including John Davis. A kind of portable support community, Beyond Forgetting is a fine and valuable contribution for family, patients, caregivers, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of Alzheimer’s. This book is long overdue!
