TRAVEL AS A POLITICAL ACT

Travel writer, television host, and one of the most highly regarded authorities on international travel, Rick Steves visits from Edmonds to discuss something a little different from the usual where-and-how guidebook fare.

His new book explores various facets of why we travel—for example, the ways travel can  foster cultural understanding, peace, and help travelers broaden their minds and face their own insecurities and fears. Steves will talk about how to travel more thoughtfully, and show how his own travels to such destinations as Asia and the Middle East have shaped his views of the world and human relations.

This event will be held at the Bainbridge High School Commons.

We welcome back Seattle children’s author Andrea Helman. Andrea has a special gift for writing great wildlife books for kids, and has visited us to share earlier books including O is for Orca and 1-2-3 Moose.

Her new book, which also features beautiful photographs, takes young readers into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a place that is teeming with wildlife, where plants and animals depend on the environment and each other for survival.  Come see her fascinating presentation on animals including the bearded seal and beluga whale.

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK HALLOWEEN PARTY

We invite ghosts and ghouls middle school age and up to join us for a Halloween party based on Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book.

In his first full-length novel for middle-graders since the international bestseller Coraline, Neil Gaiman introduces Bod, a boy who is the only living resident of a graveyard. Can a boy raised by ghosts face the wonders and terrors of the worlds of both the living and the dead?

We'll have special decorations, ghost stories with Lynn Brunnelle—local children’s author of Campout—fiendish refreshments and a costume contest based on the book.

Gaiman has promised to visit (at a future date) the book store with the best Halloween party based on his book, and we intend to win!

Meeting continuously since 1992, our store-sponsored book group convenes in the bookstore on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm to discuss the best in fiction & nonfiction, with the occasional classic thrown in for fun.

Join us for a party to celebrate Sandra Boynton's new book and DVD. There will be a special screening of One Shoe Blues, starring B.B. King and a cast of delightfully overeager sock puppets.

Bookstore staff will perform the Boynton Blues and the Bainbridge Blues written by Ann Combs. Jenn Rhoads from Esther's Fabrics, will assist party goers in making sock puppets to take home, attendees will also be able to make their own shoe box guitars and try their hand at writing blues lyrics.There will be great music and giveaways galore.

Bring one great sock (any size) that yearns to become a sock puppet and a shoe box or kleenex box if you have one- we'll provide the rest. We will make a card to send to Sandra Boynton who very much wanted to come back to Bainbridge, but is unable to travel due an illness in her family.

Meeting continuously since 1999, members of the Speculative Fiction Writing Cooperative have shared their passion for speculative fiction in this supportive group where, under the aegis of science fiction, writers of all sorts hone their skills in fantasy, hard science, horror, slipstream fiction, myth, mystery, magical realism... and more!

K2: LIFE & DEATH ON THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS MOUNTAIN 

Armchair climbers and those who get a rush from any kind of contact with the adventure that is mountaineering will welcome back Bainbridge climber and author  Ed Viesturs (No Shortcuts to the Top.) Viesturs’ new book, co-authored with David Roberts, explores K2—the holy grail of climbing—its history, those who have attempted to climb it, and the lessons learned through confronting issues of risk, ambition, and loyalty to one’s teammates. Viesturs presents a slide show focussing on seven of the mountain’s most dramatic campaigns, from his own  troubled ascent to a 2008 tragedy in which eleven climbers died.

Flacco brings the wisdom of experience, having recently published his own new nonfiction work, The Road Out of Hell: Sanford Clark and the True Story of the Wineville Murders. Martin, his life partner, is a well-known literary agent specializing in nonfiction titles. She divides her time between Bainbridge and Southern California.
