Leaving Yesler, with Peter Bacho
Bacho’s first young adult book, Leaving Yesler is about a teenager
trying to find his identity and cope with the deaths of his mother from
cancer and his brother in Vietnam, while he and his stepfather struggle
to leave the Yesler housing project in Seattle. Faced with the challenge
of caring for his aging father this young man from urban Seattle's
housing projects is forced to take control of his life and identity as
he traverses a period of life-altering change marked by new interests
new challenges and ultimately new life. Out of Bobby's sexual and emotional growth emerges a great capacity for
forgiveness a penchant for cooking and a deep commitment to family.
Bacho is author
of the American Book Award-winning novel, “Cebu,” and the Washington
Governor’s Writers Award-winning short story collection, “A Dark Blue
Suit.” He lives in Tacoma and teaches in the Liberal Arts Program at
