Paul

As manager and co-editor of our store's newsletter, Paul is the backbone of our staff here at Eagle Harbor Books. At this store since 1995, he's been in the book selling business since 1989 and is former President of the board of directors of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. As a science fiction aficionado, Paul also hosts the Speculative Fiction Writing Co-operative (that meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the store) and also the Eagle Harbor Readers Circle (that meets on the first Tuesday here at the bookstore). In his spare time Paul writes, publishes, enjoys jazz, and is slowly chipping away at various home improvements. Speaking of his life in books, Paul says, "My curiosity for just about everything naturally led me to books, and my love of books led me here."

The City & The City (Hardcover)

By China Mieville
$26.00
ISBN-13: 9780345497512
Availability: Special Order - Subject to Availability
Published: Del Rey, 05/01/2009

What begins as a classically told noir mystery becomes an existential thriller like no other book you’ll ever read. There is a border between two cities that exist in the same time, the same place. When a woman is murdered in one by someone from the other, the unimaginable must be investigated: Breach. Miéville is a master at portraying the gritty urban landscape, and reaches new heights in wrapping masterful storytelling around a questioning of our reality. This novel does what great speculative fiction does best: It leads the reader down a path that re-examines our notions of the world we live in. Weeks after reading this, I continue to dream of themes held within this book. ~ Paul

The Monstrumologist (Hardcover)

By Rick Yancey
$17.99
ISBN-13: 9781416984481
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 09/01/2009

WARNING: This book is neither for the squeamish nor the faint of heart. A journal of horror, promised to be the first of many, by the orphaned apprentice of Dr. Warthrop, (said Monstrumologist), it will grab you by the guts and not let go. Set in 19th century New England and reminiscent of the gothic style and atmosphere of Poe and Lovecraft, this gripping yarn includes a colorful cast of characters who will compel you in spite of—or perhaps because of—all the gruesome bits of a well-told tale. This one will leave you sleeping with the lights on. Ages 12+. ~ Paul

Boneshaker (Paperback)

By Cherie Priest
$15.99
ISBN-13: 9780765318411
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Tor Books, 09/01/2009

**Awarded the PNBA (Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award for 2009**
Set in the post-gold-rush frontier days of the Pacific Northwest, this intense and atmospheric novel is about loyalty, redemption, and cleansing the sins of the father... oh, and also about zombies walled-up in downtown Seattle, air pirates holed up on Bainbridge Island, and a toxic miasma that has infected Puget Sound. Hold onto your seats because this steampunk story by Seattle writer Cherie Priest will take you for a wild ride. ~ Paul

The Magicians (Hardcover)

By Lev Grossman
$26.95
ISBN-13: 9780670020553
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Viking Adult, 08/01/2009

Best one-liner to describe this: It’s like Harry Potter goes to college... in upstate New York. The magic in the world that Grossman reveals is complex, and the lessons that the main character, Quentin Clearwater, learns are hard, with dire consequences. Once you start reading this eccentric story, it will cast its spell on you and you’ll not want to stop. It’s the most fun I’ve had reading in a long time. If you don’t get it for yourself, get it for the magic-lover in your life. They’ll thank you for it! ~ Paul

Mythago Wood (Paperback)

By Robert Holdstock
$15.99
ISBN-13: 9780765307293
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Orb Books, 09/01/2003
I am just so darn happy. For years now, I've been recommending a book to people that has been, sadly, out of print. Now, finally, it's back in print with Lavondyss, the next in the series, soon to follow. Set in Gloucestershire, Britain, just after World War II, Mythago Wood draws us into Ryhope Wood, a vast tract of primal forest inhabited by mythagos--imagined-into-reality archetypes of old tales, songs and traditions--who live out their legends again and again. We join Steven Huxley as he searches for his vanished brother in this mysterious wood. Holdstock fuses two of my passions, the inherent magic of ancient forests and the elusive mystery of myth. ~ Paul

Einstein's Dreams (Paperback)

By Alan Lightman
$14.00
ISBN-13: 9781400077809
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Vintage, 11/01/2004
It took many years and more recommendations than I can count to unearth this book from my nightstand stack to read-and it took the Eagle Harbor Readers Circle to finally make me do it. (It was an excellent discussion, by the way). The premise is that while Einstein, as a young patent clerk, is developing his theory of relativity, he dreams of a series of worlds that look like our own, but behave according to particular perceptions of space and time. This science fiction element appeals to me and is very thought-provoking. But it's the deeper level of the book that I really love: it allows readers to reflect upon how they live their lives based on how they perceive time. Is it precious or wasted? Do you live for the future, the past, or the moment? The vignettes that make up the book encourage mindfulness and scrutinize our personal and societal values. This is a gem of a book that I'll read again and again. Thank you, book group! -- Paul

The Club Dumas (Paperback)

By Arturo Perez-Reverte, Sonia Soto (Translator)
$14.95
ISBN-13: 9780156032834
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Mariner Books, 05/01/2006
A bibliophile's mystery. Attempting to authenticate an original manuscript of The Three Musketeers, a mercenary rare book detective is drawn into perils unforeseen. Interwoven into this is a smattering of the occult. The ending is as intriguing as the body of this puzzling work. It teaches, it reveals, it makes you think.

Petite Rouge (Paperback)

By Mike Artell, Jim Harris (Illustrator)
$6.99
ISBN-13: 9780142500705
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Puffin, 06/01/2003
This twist on the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale takes place in the bayou and is told in a Cajun dialect-good thing it includes a pronunciation guide! Between the hilarious story (told in rhyme with a Louisiana bite) and the remarkably comedic illustrations (especially the googly-eyed 'gator who plays the wolf's role), laughs abound in this book. This is most fun I've had reading out loud. Ages 5 & up. ~ Paul

The Three Questions (Hardcover)

By Jon J. Muth (Illustrator)
$17.99
ISBN-13: 9780439199964
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Scholastic Press, 04/01/2002
I discovered this book when it was given to my family as a gift. The title intrigued, the watercolors entranced, and, ultimately, the message inspired. A real treasure for both children and adults, it succeeds as a synergy of art and story, of Zen and Tolstoy, and its lesson is as simple as it is profound. But lessons are best learned, not simply as answers to questions, but rather when, through our own actions and experience, we discover the answers ourselves. So I pass this gift on to you. Read

Winter's Tale (Paperback)

By Mark Helprin
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9780156031196
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Mariner Books, 06/01/2005
This novel has been aptly called a fairy tale for adults. Helprin's language dazzles with his ability to describe each character's singular beauty. He weaves these memorable characters into a larger-than-life- tapestry of love, redemption, and magical realism in a New York City that both was and should have been.

The Eight (Mass Market Paperback)

By Katherine Neville
$7.99
ISBN-13: 9780345366238
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Ballantine Books, 01/01/1990
Even if you have no interest in chess, this adventurous novel will sweep you away. Two heroines, centuries apart, are on the trail to solve the mystery of Charlemagne's elusive chess service, which is much more than it seems. Neville weaves many elements into this globe-spanning tale-- music, chess, alchemy, history. I've not met anyone who has read it and not absolutely loved it.

The Wooden Sea (Paperback)

By Jonathan Carroll
$16.99
ISBN-13: 9780765300133
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Tor Books, 02/01/2002
If you've ever awakened from a beautiful dream fraught with bizarre symbolism yet so viscerally real that you're sure it must have been true, you've probably just finished reading a Jonathon Carroll novel. His optimistically cynical works foist growth upon even the most unwilling of his characters, and his metaphors have a richness and originality that beg to be read aloud to the nearest passerby. I was entranced by The Land of Laughs twenty years ago and his skill as a storyteller has not diminished in the least. Like a good dream, his books stay with you forever.

Enemy at the Gates (Movie Tie-In): The Battle for Stalingrad (Paperback)

By William Craig
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9780142000007
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Penguin (Non-Classics), 02/01/2001
Do yourself a favor and don't forego this book for the movie. In this history that captivates like no other, Craig reveals the course of the World War II battle for Stalingrad through the eyes of individuals involved. He alternates between the sides of the conflict, showing not only the military strategies and intrigues but also how the battle affected civilians. This deeply personal book has stayed with me for the past 20 years and I was very pleased to see it back in print. ~ Paul

Son of a Witch (Paperback)

By Gregory Maguire
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9780060747220
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Paperbacks, 10/01/2006
SON OF A WITCH by Gregory Maguire
If you are a fan of Maguire's Wicked: The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West-and there are many of you out there-the time for rejoicing has arrived at last. After a very long decade, Maguire returns us to Oz to continue the tale of Liir, who may or may not be the Wicked Witch's son. At the start of the book, we discover him broken in body and spirit and under the tender ministrations of the maunts at the Cloister of Saint Glinda. But what led him to such a dire state after Elphaba's watery death at the hands of Dorothy, the unwitting pawn of the Wizard? We discover Oz all over again through Liir's eyes in this fairy tale for adults. Maguire deftly wields his pen like a magic wand, casting a spell of humor dark and delicious with more than a smattering of biting social commentary. Once you've discovered Wicked and this book, you'll exclaim with the vehemence of a house dropping on a witch that you're not in Baum's Oz anymore. Available September 27th. ~ Paul

Watchmen (Paperback)

By Dave Gibbons, Alan Moore
$19.99
ISBN-13: 9780930289232
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: DC Comics, 04/01/1995
If you know me, you know that I love to read and recommend books that transcend their genre. This classic graphic novel combines brilliant storytelling with powerful artwork, soulful characters and insightful social commentary. All this and it's a darn fine read. Read it before the movie comes out. You won't regret it.

The Somnambulist (Paperback)

By Jonathan Barnes
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9780061375392
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Paperbacks, 01/01/2009
Fans of the "new Victorian" and the steam-punk movements in science fiction will love first-time novelist Barnes' extraordinary tale, which opens with these words: "Be warned. This book has no literary value whatsoever. It is a lurid piece of nonsense, convoluted, implausible, peopled by unconvincing characters, written in drearily pedestrian prose, frequently ridiculous and willfully bizarre. Needless to say, I doubt you'll believe a word of it." Despite this warning, the story, as told by a completely unreliable narrator, is compulsively readable. The panoply of quirky, colorful protagonists and villains - a Holmesian detective/illusionist with his giant milk-chugging mute of a sidekick, a Merlin-esque socialite, a human fly, prep school attired assassins, an albino agent - will draw you in and not let go. I can't wait to talk to someone else who reads this one! ~ Paul

What Happened to Anna K. (Paperback)

By Irina Reyn
$14.00
ISBN-13: 9781416558941
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Touchstone, 05/01/2009
I loved this wise and heartrending book. Reyn possesses a keen insight into the entanglements that arise from ill-conceived romantic expectations, and an eloquence to match. Taking core themes of Anna Karenina and the tragic flaw of its title character, and setting them in a modernday Manhattan Bukharian-Jewish community, Reyn tells a story entirely her own. Alone or paired with Tolstoy's classic, this will make sumptuous book group fare. ~ Paul

The Eyre Affair (Paperback)

By Jasper Fforde
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9780142001806
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Penguin (Non-Classics), 02/01/2003
Have you ever discovered a book so utterly delightful and wholly original that it defies description and leaves you tongue-tied when you try? I stumble over phrases such as "Monty Python's England in an alternate reality," and "Detective novel with time travel," and "the protagonist chases the villain INTO Jane Eyre!" Please, just read this book already so I don't have to try to describe it anymore!

The Island Within (Paperback)

By Richard Nelson
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9780679732396
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Vintage, 04/01/1991
In the best tradition of Henry David Thoreau, who chose Walden Pond as the focus of his naturalist philosophy, Nelson chooses instead a nameless, uninhabited island in the Pacific Northwest. And as is the case with the best nature writing, he delves deeply into both the natural world around us and the spiritual world within. The quiet, contemplative, and piercing grace of his writing is like a lone loon's cry on a mist-filled dawn. ~ Paul

Perdido Street Station (Paperback)

By China Mieville
$18.95
ISBN-13: 9780345443021
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Del Rey, 02/01/2001
As a life-long science fiction reader, I rarely come across a novel that truly surprises me with its originality. Mieville has done that and more with this, dark, richly-woven tale and lush world-building on a scale that boggles the mind.

Jayber Crow (Paperback)

By Wendell Berry
$15.95
ISBN-13: 9781582431604
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Counterpoint, 08/01/2001
Our store book group enjoyed this poetic and multi-layered homage to small-town America, and after due consideration, I happily added it to my All Time Top Ten Favorite Books list. Simply told, it's the story of a barber in the fictitious town of Port William, Kentucky. Go deeper and it explores themes of unrequited love, sustainability, stewardship, and our responsibility to our neighbors, community, and world. Barbara Kingsolver also recently recommended it in the New York Times Book Review as required reading for presidential candidates. Find out why!

Ender's Shadow (Mass Market Paperback)

$8.99
ISBN-13: 9780812575712
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Tor Books, 12/01/2000
Card brings us back full force into the world of Ender's Game with a sequel that is a worthy re-exploration of childhood rivalries, friendships, and the nature of leadership. This time we see the Battle School through the eyes of Ender's sidekick, Bean, who has tested better than Ender in all areas except the ability to lead. Finally, a sequel worthy of Ender's Game.

The Poisonwood Bible (Paperback)

By Barbara Kingsolver
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9780060786502
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 07/01/2005
Since 1998 when our in-store book group discussed this, it remains the record-holder for attracting the most number of attendees to discuss a book: (25)! Although you would think such a discussion would be difficult to facilitate (it was), it was made so much easier since we were ALL in agreement that this is an IMPORTANT book that SHOULD be read.

The Physiognomy (Paperback)

By Jeffrey Ford
$14.95
ISBN-13: 9781930846531
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Golden Gryphon Press, 10/01/2008
There's a newish term being bandied about in Speculative Fiction circles: The New Weird. China Mieville is a shining example of this new genre of Kafka-esque Sci- Fantasy, but Ford is one of its best unsung writers. This novel, the first in the Well-Built City trilogy, is narrated by Cley, an unsympathetic anti-hero who, in the service of a mad-genius tyrant, conducts an inquisition that condemns people on the basis of their facial features. (Google "Physiognomy"- it's a "real" science!) The story, though dark from the outset, is ultimately redemptive and well worth the journey. Ford is a literary craftsman who effectively combines the allegorical with great storytelling, challenging traditional notions of Science Fiction. ~ Paul

High Fidelity (Paperback)

By Nick Hornby
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9781573228213
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Riverhead Trade, 03/01/2000
When Rob's girlfriend leaves him because of his complacency (except when it comes to rearranging his record collection), he is forced into a state of blundering self-examination. This laugh-out-loud male confessional honestly delves into the toe-stubbing psyche of the masculine mind. Full of familiar ruminations and regrettable truths, this book will make you nod in recognition of its insights and truths.
