Let's Talk About Water
Water is the reason our planet has life. This precious liquid helps create, fuel, and nourish everything from microscopic creatures to sea life, birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and plantlife. It shapes our continents, sustains our forests and fields, and is an essential ingredient in so much of our daily life. It's also fun, joyous, soothing, and channels our imagination and creativity. Water can also devastate us with its power, in floods, tsunamis, and in its absence during a drought. We need to respect water, and protect it. Human efforts to treat it as simply an unlimited resource has led to polluted waterways, destabilized ecosystems, climate change, and has lead to the likelihood that water will become a limited resource in a needy world.
As Rachel Carson wrote, "It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose, should now be threatebned by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is, rather, to life itself."
